G̱aayhldáa 'la'áaygaa/Warrior design by Haida artist Sondra S. Segundo.

We wear our orange shirts once a year to remember our babies/children who were forced to attend internment camps ("they" called them boarding schools), that punished babies for being Indigenous. They (my grandmother's) were not allowed to speak our languages. However, our elders still taught us our songs and remained proud of our heritage and now, the new generations continue to work everyday to heal our words that were once threatened with extinction.

Each one of us is a G̱aayhldáa 'la'áaygaa/Warrior! We can never forget about our children who didn't make it out of the internment camps alive. Never. Those who know, know. We collectively peacefully gather to drum and sing songs and wear our orange shirts on September 30 - "Orange Shirt Day" to honor them.  Every culture is welcome to wear these shirts to honor and remember our precious gíitii (children).
